What are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are small insects which feed on the blood of warm blooded animals. They prefer a mostly hairless host, like humans. An established bed bug population will have adults, nymphs, and eggs. The mature adult bugs are 4-5 mm long and 1.5-3 mm wide. They are reddish brown in color and have a flattened oval appearance. Immature bed bugs, commonly known as nymphs, are translucent and lighter in color. The bed bug eggs are oblong, small, and white colored. A bed bug can live for up to a year without feeding. A female can lay 1-5 eggs per day and 200-500 in her lifetime.
Where do Bed Bugs hide?
Bed bugs like to hide near the host. They burrow into small cracks and crevices, rest there and lay their eggs. The area where the host is resting or sleeping is the most common place that they are found. Mattresses, box springs, headboards, bed frames, and nightstands are frequent hiding spots for bed bugs. But recliners, couches, and furniture are also hiding spots. They can live in other areas and travel across the room every 5 to 10 days to feed on a host then return to their hiding spot after they are done. Bed bugs are usually most active at night when people are sleeping but have been known to become active during the day if a host is near. Bed bugs are attracted to carbon dioxide and body heat.
How can l get rid of Bed Bugs?
There are several different treatment options for bed bug infestations. At World Pest Control we offer heat treatments, chemical treatments, or a combination of the two treatments. World Pest Control was one of the first companies in Kansas to offer heat treatments for bed bug elimination. We have been performing heat treatments since 2007. World Pest Control offers a Temp Air Remedial heat treatment or a more limited heat treatment with our smaller mobile unit. Our highly trained professionals have an abundance of experience treating structures in a five state area.
Bed bugs die within seconds when exposed to temperatures of 120-135 degrees. The heat treatment process is done with our specially designed equipment that ensures total elimination of all stages of the bed bugs. Adults, nymphs and eggs are eliminated in cracks and crevices of furniture, walls, floors, and ceilings. This treatment is 100% effective in most type of structures, it can also be combined with a chemical application to make it even more effective.
World Pest Control can also provide a complete chemical treatment for bed bugs. The level of the bed bug infestation will determine the number of treatments that are necessary. Most infestations require 3 treatments. The treatment is performed every 14-16 days until a final inspection results in no live bed bugs.
The treatment involves the application of different materials each visit. All materials are labeled for bed bug treatment. The treatment is made to all cracks and crevices in furniture, walls, ceilings, floors, trim, window sills, wall hangings, and other items that bed bugs can hide in.
Cooperation with the homeowner or tenant on reducing clutter, laundering clothing/bedding, and utilizing mattress encasements will make either treatment that much more successful. Either of our treatment options will result in the total elimination of bed bugs from your home/apartment/office. Beware that a re-introduction of bed bugs back into the structure will likely result in a new infestation and therefore require more treatment.
